Title: Advanced nanosystems for a new era in molecular oncology (NEWTON)

Description: NEWTON is a interdisciplinary consortium aimed to exploit 3D models connected with innovative technologies designed to improve sensitivity and specificity of biomarker assays. The in vitro platform will set up the 3D models building a 3D Lab-on-a-Chip. The technological platform will provide: 1) new technologies to increase sensitivity and specificity of biosassay based on Micro Electro-Mechanical System and photonic crystals; 2) micro-scaffold for 3D models, with capability to tune physical, chemical and mechanical properties as well as to tailor bioactive characteristics by introduction of matricellular cues, or more in general, bioactive moieties; 3) the integration of the technological devices to produce a 3D-LOC.

Title: Diamond Microchip for "drug screeninig" and biomedical applications (MicroDiBi)

Description: : The main scope of the project is the improvement of the functionalities of two devices, made of nano- and monocrystallline diamond, characterized by conductive nanostructures, and showing biocompatibility, electrical conductivity and optical transparency properties and so allowing the monitoring of electrical and optical signals of cells and neurons and the several biomolecules released by them after excitation in vivo and in vitro. The novelty of the project stays in the integration of the device into a biochip equipped with a microfluidic packaging for the management of the liquids containing the cells to be monitored and coupled with A/D convertors for data transduction to computerized analysis systems.

Development of a technological platform for molecular recongnition sensing and advanced optical microscopy

The research activity is focused on two main activities, aimed to a performance increase of detection techniques of outstanding
importance in biology: optical microscopy and molecular sensing. Within this project the performances of cellular optical imaging
will be improved setting up of a multiplexed detection technique with little or no overlap between each channel, enhancing the optical
signal. Moreover, the development of mass detector biosensor based on microcantilever systems will permit to shift from qualitative
data to quantitative measurements of key molecules involved in physiological processes. This can lead crucial informations to characterize
complex mechanisms such as angiogenesis and tumor progression.

ASK - Innovative auxiliary steering knob including vehicle function activation for drivers with disabilities

The project aims to develop an innovative auxiliary device for drivers with disabilities (one-armed people), that permits
the activation of wipers, directional indicators, headlights, warning lights, washers and the horn holding the steering wheels.
It consists of a user interface unit, placed inside a steering knob, and a central unit located near the steering columns:
the first one receives the user's indications and transmits them, by a Radio Frequency media, to the second that is connected
to the vehicle CAN or LIN, avoiding alterations of the vehicle harness. Then it translates the user's requests into network
frames towards the activation nodes. The steering knob will be equipped with an integrated biometric sensor, based on the
nanotechnology approach,
that permits to detect the driver's health state, advicing him about the possible danger.

microfluidic cartridge (Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC)) and a new microarray platform. This platform will exploit the Arrayed
Primer Extension (APEX) technology for DNA fluorescent detection, using an already available optical system that
allows for the simultaneous detection of four colours. The platform is devised to perform a cost-saving low-to-medium
density analysis of DNA Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) and mutations, suitable for detecting simultaneously sets of

Aim of the present project is the realization and characterization of magnetic tunnelling junctions (MTJs) produced by RF / magnetron sputtering; Co/MgO/Co junctions will be coupled to the standard semiconductors commercially available, in order to develop a demonstrator of magnetic tunnelling transistor. The possibility of injecting hot spin-polarized electrons into a silicon diffusion layer will be explored, exploiting both the cost-effectiveness and the very high spin lifetime that characterize this semiconductor.

Aim of the present project is the fabrication of patterned magnetic structures by electron beam / optical lithographies. The study of magnetic properties of different pattern geometries will be accomplished on standard and innovative ferromagnetic thin films. Furthermore, magnetic tunnelling junctions (MTJs) produced by RF / magnetron sputtering will be coupled to the standard semiconductors commercially available, in order to develop a demonstrator of magnetic tunnelling transistor.
