1805. [adaptation of French polytechnique, from Greek polýtechnos skilled in many arts + -ique -IC]. A. adjective pertaining to, dealing with, or devoted to, various arts; especially in p. schools, an institution for giving instruction in various technical subjects.
P. Institution, an institution in London, opened in 1838, for the exhibition of objects connected with the industrial arts; now, a technical and recreative school. After the école polytechnique, an engineering school in Paris, founded in 1794.
