Call for Expression of Interest (EoI)

For a position of Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences DISMA, Politecnico di Torino, in the context of a special Excellence grant awarded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.

Who we are:

Politecnico di Torino is a major technical University located in Torino, North-West Italy, close to the Alps. Torino is a large city (900. 000 dwellers) and an important business and cultural center. It has been the first Italian Capital from 1861 to 1865. Politecnico di Torino is one of the most prestigious Italian Universities and it ranks 52nd in the area of Engineering according to the last QS World University Rankings.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences (DISMA) at Politecnico di Torino has been awarded the title of Department of Excellence 2018-2022 from the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). Consequently, it has received a large grant to pursue a scientific project, which is illustrated in our website.

What we expect from applicants:

Applicants should have a strong expertise in either discrete or computational mathematics and a genuine scientific interest in one of the four main themes of the research project, that can be found here. They need to be mature and independent researchers with demonstrated track records of publications in primary academic journals, experience in teaching both at undergraduate and graduate level. Interdisciplinarity and potential to attract competitive funding will be highly valued as well as some experience in supervising PhD students and Post-Docs.

This call is only a preliminary stage aimed to collect expressions of interest, and it is not a formal application for positions. On the basis of the collected EoIs, the department will decide whether or not to open a position in a specific sub-discipline. Academic positions in Italy can only be awarded through a public competition or direct appointment. The DISMA will contact the selected applicants to inform them about the opening of the formal positions and the required documentation.

What we offer:

The initial gross salary of an Associate Professor s around 50 K Euros per year. The net amount after taxes depends on the total personal income, the composition of the family, and other parameters. In the case of a direct appointment, the initial salary can be higher depending on the academic track of the candidate.
A four-year tax exemption on 90 percent of the salary is available according to the Italian tax law for those candidates who have been residing outside Italy for 2 years or more.

The hired Associate Professor will receive a starting grant of 100 K Euro to support their scientific activity.
Moreover, the MIUR Excellence grant will provide special funds to attract PhD students and Post-Docs to join the department and host large international scientific events as well as other activities such as PhD courses, seminars and workshops.

Responsibilities:

The appointed Associate Professor is expected to conduct outstanding original research activity and to attract funds through national and international competitions. Politecnico di Torino requires every professor to teach for 120 hours per year (typically amounting to two courses) at the undergraduate and graduate level, to supervise students for their bachelor, master and PhD thesis, and to contribute to the administrative life of the department.
