Il Groundwater Engineering Group del Politecnico di Torino \u00e8 composto da un team di esperti che, sotto la guida di Rajandrea Sethi, conduce ricerche innovative nell\u2019ambito dell\u2019ingegneria degli acquiferi. Gli obiettivi del Groundwater Engineering Group sono quelli di garantire un approvvigionamento idrico sostenibile, di salvaguardare e valorizzare le risorse idriche sotterranee e di fornire soluzioni avanzate per la bonifica di acquiferi contaminati.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Il lavoro del gruppo si basa sullo sviluppo di teorie, soluzioni tecniche, software e strumenti per la risoluzione dei complessi problemi riguardanti la caratterizzazione, lo sfruttamento, la protezione e il risanamento di un acquifero. Le attivit\u00e0 di ricerca sono volte allo studio di uno sfruttamento sostenibile di sistemi acquiferi ad uso agricolo, industriale e sociale. La ricerca del Groundwater Engineering Group copre un\u2019ampia variet\u00e0 di tematiche, tra le quali: sfruttamento e monitoraggio sostenibile delle falde idriche, delimitazione delle aree di salvaguardia dei pozzi ad uso potabile, bonifica di siti contaminati (nanoremediation inclusa), modellazione multiscala di flusso e trasporto, valutazione del rischio ambientale, destino delle microplastiche nell\u2019ambiente, sviluppo di fitofarmaci ecocompatibili e sfruttamento di energie rinnovabili (e.g. risorse geotermiche). Il gruppo partecipa a molti progetti di ricerca finanziati dall\u2019Unione Europea, dal Ministero dell\u2019Istruzione, dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 e della Ricerca (MIUR), dal Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) e dal Governo della Regione Piemonte. Il Groundwater Engineering Group ha partecipato alla realizzazione della prima barriera reattiva permeabile usando ferro zero valente in Italia e al monitoraggio delle falde idriche nei cantieri del progetto MOSE a Venezia. I sistemi acquiferi contengono pi\u00f9 del 95% dell\u2019acqua dolce presente nel nostro pianeta e il loro sostentamento \u00e8 estremamente vulnerabile alle pressioni naturali e alle attivit\u00e0 antropogeniche. Da un lato, lo sovrasfruttamento degli acquiferi pu\u00f2 portare a un esaurimento delle risorse idriche sotterranee, dall\u2019altro la contaminazione proveniente dallo smaltimento di rifiuti industriali, dal percolato di discarica, dalla fuoriuscita di liquidi tossici e da attivit\u00e0 agricole pu\u00f2 impedirne il loro utilizzo.<\/p>\n\n

Un\u2019indagine del Joint Research Centre ha stimato la presenza di 2,8 milioni di siti potenzialmente contaminati da attivit\u00e0 umane nel territorio dell\u2019Unione Europea. Secondo il rapporto, i siti contaminati rappresentano una seria minaccia all\u2019ambiente e alla salute dell\u2019uomo e il loro risanamento comporta un\u2019onerosa spesa pubblica. Sebbene negli ultimi anni gli sforzi per la bonifica di aree contaminate si siano moltiplicati, numerose attivit\u00e0 inquinanti stanno ancora avendo luogo e una legislazione uniforme per la salvaguardia dell\u2019ambiente non \u00e8 ancora stata varata.<\/p>\n\n

La contaminazione del suolo non \u00e8 per\u00f2 l\u2019unico problema che minaccia lo sfruttamento delle risorse idriche. Il cambiamento climatico sta alterando il modello comportamentale dell\u2019acqua, causando ammanchi e siccit\u00e0 in tutto il mondo. Attualmente pi\u00f9 di 1 miliardo di persone non hanno accesso all\u2019acqua e quasi 3 miliardi soffrono di carenze idriche almeno un mese all\u2019anno. Secondo quanto riportato dal WWF, la situazione \u00e8 destinata a peggiorare: entro il 2025 due terzi della popolazione mondiale potrebbe far fronte a carenze idriche.<\/p>\n\n
