Hydrogen

Hydrogen and the related technologies have been one of the main focuses of the LAME group research activity in the 2000s.

Some examples of this activity are:

  • Design of an integrated system for aerospace applications (prototype –at a laboratory scale – of a system composed by an electrolyser powered by PV cells, a purification unit, a storage system, a fuel cell, and a load emulator) (HeliNet project)
  • LCA of fuel cells for cogenerative applications (NEEDS project)
  • LCA of hydrogen transportation (NEEDS project)
  • Hydrogen fuel cell bus in Torino (study of the regulatory system, risk analysis)
  • Feasibility study on the replacement of shuttle buses for local public transport in Valle d’Aosta with fuel cell buses
  • Risk analysis of liquid hydrogen transportation
  • LCA of innovative energy scenarios (generation IV nuclear plants, hydrogen production, fuel cells) (Ph.D. Thesis)
  • Implementation – into the modeling tool developed in the REACCESS project – of energy corridors for the EU supply of hydrogen produced from fossil fuels (lignite) and renewable sources (concentrated solar power, wind and biomass)

Part of the laboratory equipment used in the HeliNet project has been made available to the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for the SkySpark project. The LAME research group has actively participated in the creation of the the HySyLab laboratory (a laboratory of excellence for testing hydrogen technologies) in the Environment Park; the group has provided advice on the acquisition of major equipment from both German and Canadian suppliers.

The group participates in the Italian Hydrogen Forum activities, on the behalf of the Energy Department. (www.h2forum.it).
