Translation of the Latin eulogy of Mårten Triewald following the table of contents:--

In the year 1728, the 28th of August, I saw this machine, wonderful for its swift movements; and at the same time I marvelled at the goodness of divine providence, which so well provided for the welfare of the realm and fatherland that, just when the Archimedes of the North [i.e., Christopher Polhem (1661-1751)] was in his declining age, there was one amongst its citizens who by his genius and diligence would follow up and rival his great reputation, and, by signs evident to all, prove that he, like the phoenix of old, was destined to be his country's benefactor, and to accomlish this great work, that the peoples oversea and our owndescendants might know that maturity of genius and of judgement had nowhere fixed their seat and abiding-place more securely than in this almost the furthest country of the North.

Page 1. Savery obtained his patent in 1698. The term of fourteen years was extended to 35 by Act of Parliament in 1699. There is no evidence of a money grant in respect of the invention. From 1705 to 1714 Savery held the post of Treasurer for Sick and Wounded Seamen in connexion with which there were many financial transactions; it is possible that Triewald or his informant was misled by one of these.
Page 4, line 2. This is the engine shown in the well-known Barney print of 1719.
Page 5, line 14. There is evidence that up to August 1716 four engines had been erected.
Page 6, line 1. This seems to be the only known reference to Samuel Calley.
Page 7, par.9. It would appear from this that Newcomen had met Newton.
Page 10 line 24, 25. 1 skeppund = 374 lbs. = 171 kg.; 1 lispund = 18 lbs. 12 oz. avd.; 1 skålpund = 13.7 oz. troy = 0.425 kg. As to VIctualie, see note to page 41 below. (T.)
Page 24, line 3. A Swedish kanna is equal to roughly 1/2 gallon or 159.73 English cubic inches or 261,73 centiliter. (T.)

Page 29, line 3. Gerhard Meijer, 1704-1784, member of the Swedish Academy of Science, was Superintendent of Typefounding in Sweden. He contributed several articles to the Proceedings of the Academy, on fire extinguishing, boring machines for cannon, &c.
Page 36, par. 30. The reference is to the York Buildings Water Works which stood at the lower end of VIlliers Street, Strand, and pumped from the Thames. This works had been started in 1676 with pumps worked by horses; in 1712 a Savery apparatus was installed, and then in 1726 a Newcomen engine. There is an engraving of the engine by Sutton Nicholls which is reproduced in the book by Weidler referred to (also cf. The Engineer 1905, ii, 129).
Page 39, par.33. There were also engines at Cassell and at Paris, and it is said that there was one at Toledo.
Page 41, line 18. Victualie Weight. From the 17th century "Marck" is often used instead of skålpund to denote the same weight, 425.08 gram. According to the Royal Ordinance of 1733 and 1739, five different weights were legal under the same name: 1 skålpund or Mark (Marck) Sea town weight = 25.6 lod; 1 ditto Country town = 26.88 lod; 1 ditto Mining district = 28.16 lod; 1 ditto Money weight = 16 lod; 1 ditto Victualie weight = 32 lod; 1 lod = 205.2404417 grains avd., or 0.4276083 oz. troy = roughly half an ounce.
