Salvatore Cognetti De Martiis
was born in Bari on 19th January 1844. Cognetti De Martiis studied in Pisa from 1861 to 1865.
In 1866 he enlisted among Garibaldi volunteers for the campaign in Tyrol, whereas one year later, after returning to Bari, Cognetti De Martiis was appointed as director of municipal schools and professor of political economy at the Industrial and Professional Institute.
In 1868 he moved to Mantova to teach Law and Economics at the Provincial Technical Institute. In Mantova Cognetti De Martiis started to work as a publicist managing the "Gazzetta di Mantova" (Mantova Gazette) (1870-1874) and co-operating with "Perseveranza" (Perseverance), with works on political and social subjects.
Appointed as professor in Universities of Siena and Turin (1878), Cognetti De Martiis came to Turin to teach Political economy and took also an important free course in Sociology.
The professor founded in Turin the Laboratory of Political economy, now bearing his name and he was a director from 1893.
Cognetti De Martiis has been for years professor of Economics and Industrial Legislation at the Royal Italian Industrial Museum of Turin.
He died in Turin on 8th June 1901.
