  Alessandro Antonelli

was born in Ghemme (Novara) on 14th July 1798. Antonelli graduated in Civil Architecture in Turin in 1824 and was a student of professor Ferdinando Bonsignore.

In 1828 he won a competition at the the Royal Albertine Academy of Fine Arts for a staying in Rome, where he looked after the design of transforming Turin downtown (but this project was never implemented). However, the project got Antonelli appointed as an Academy's professor (from 1836 to 1857).

Antonelli is famous for having conceived the unit which became Turin Symbol, that is the Mole Antonelliana (Antonelli's mole), to which the architect devoted from 1863 to 1888. The Mole was commissioned to him as a temple of the Jewish community; later on, it was purchased by the Municipality of Turin as a head office for the National Museum of the Italian Independence.

Antonelli was also a deputy at the Subalpine Parliament during the second term (1849) and until his death he was a member of the Municipality Council of Turin and of Province Council.

He died in Turin on 18th October 1888.
