Post-Doc Position “Modelling and numerical simulation of the cerebral hemodynamics in the presence of cardiac arrhythmias”
For some years, there has been an ongoing fruitful scientific collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and the Department of Cardiology (directed by Professor Gaita) of the University of Turin. The cooperation concerns the mathematical modeling of the effect of cardiac arrhythmias - particularly atrial fibrillation – on the cerebral hemodynamics, and the subsequent possible onset of cognitive deficits. The problem has a great medical interest due to the remarkable growth of arrhythmic disorders in the population and, at the same time, its accurate modeling poses delicate fluid dynamics and numerical issues. It follows the considerable interest from engineering and mathematical point of views.
As part of this partnership, we intend to dedicate a postdoc position specifically aimed at the implementation and numerical simulation of mathematical models of the cerebral circulation.
The skills required are of mathematical-numerical type, with particular attention to the numerical simulation of hyperbolic equations in one-dimensional complex domains (i.e., networks of arterial vessels) and multi-scale modeling 0D-1D. The possible knowledge of the fluid-dynamic phenomena connected with the propagation of waves (pressure and flow) in closed streams as well as previous experience in hemodynamic modeling and numerical simulation, although not necessary, constitute preferential title.
The grant lasts one year (with possibility of adding another year), beginning at the end of 2017.
Application deadline: October 10, 2017.
The research will take place in Politecnico di Torino, Torino, Italy.
Specific technical skills
Good knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Matlab, Fortran, Mathematica, C, C ++, ...)
Good command of advanced numerical methods for ordinary and partial differential equations
Basic knowledge of parallel computing techniques
Interest for multidisciplinary research activities
