Numen was created during 2016/2017 academic year and represents the higher result of the team (until now): it’s a laboratory boat, a prototype that opens a great deal of opportunities in the wide and complex sailing field and for what concerns the study of materials and innovative solutions. To be fulfilled, the project required intense work of research in order to develop a new model. An acqisition box connected to extensometers gathers data about mechanical stresses and how they distribute on the hull in order to validate the model. We also developed a device to be placed on top of the mast, an experimental set-up capable of measuring pitch and roll. New combination of materials and methods were applied, like new layering of flax fiber and for the first time we created a sandwich panel for the deck to reduce the weight even more.
