THE GREAT INDUSTRY
The Turinese industry originated at the Borgo Dora where the energy for supporting it, could be found.
After the industrial revolution, the water was replaced by the coal, whereas the water mills were replaced by steam-driven machines. Then, new facilities had to be applied: the railways became the fundamental condition for settling an industry more and more, since at the end of the Nineteenth century there were no means on road transports as speedy and reliable as the train was.
The railway workshops were the first ones to be installed along railways, followed by the whole mechanics of transports, machine tools, press machines, weapon factories.
In 1899 Fiat was settled. Its first head office was at corso Dante, in the South area of the town.
Some years later, the Lingotto was designed. This is an imposing industrial complex which arose along Genoa railways and was equipped with a wide station and a railway union.
The vertical growth of Turin, from North to South, and the leaving of the Dora axis, are the most obvious symptoms of this industrial metamorphosis.
